After spending the summer apart, Darcy and Hakeem both return to Bluford High School with their own secrets and regrets. Darcy struggles to accept what happened to her, while also fighting off stress and problems with her family at home and her friends at school. Because she loves and truly trusts Hakeem, she has no choice but to face the truth:
Hakeem stared at her then. His eyes seemed to gaze right into her, and Darcy had to look away. He was showing himself to be what she remembered, what led her to him in the first place. He was smart, kind, friendly, and deep. He was trying his best to be straight up with her. She knew how hard it was. She still hadn’t managed to be straight up with him. The secrets she’d hidden for so long were falling away, but the biggest one still remained (98).
