ANNOTATION
A
graphic novel based on the real-life story of 11 year-old Robert “Yummy”
Sandifer, Yummy: The Last Days of a
Southside Shorty looks for answers to the factors that led to Sandifer’s
act of homicide and—eventually—his own murder.
Recipient of numerous awards and honors, Yummy is a sad-but-true depiction of life on the streets.
BOOKTALK (Open End / The Graphic Form)
Back in 1994—in the gang-infested Roseland section of Chicago’s Southside—11-year-old Robert “Yummy” Sandifer took a life, and then—days later—lost his own. Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty is based on this true story that left so many questions unanswered. Was it Yummy’s poor family life and neighborhood that led him to join a gang and commit acts of violence? Or was it something in himself that influenced a normal child with a love for candy and his teddy bear to take another person’s life?
What
were Yummy’s last days like, living on the streets of Chicago as he ran from both
the police and his own gang? Did he see
a different future for himself?
