ANNOTATION

When Cole discovers that his estranged father and a number of North Philadelphia neighbors are urban cowboys up against crime-infested streets, he begins to learn about the “Horseman Way”—and about himself, in the process.  This book features fantastic illustrations by Jesse Joshua Watson and is the follow-up to author G. Neri’s critically-acclaimed graphic novel, Yummy:The Last Days of a Southside Shorty.

BOOKTALK (Wrap Back to the Title / The Graphic Form / Open End)

Cole—short for Coltrane, after the legendary jazz musician—has a few short weeks to clean up his act, since missing more than his fair share of school back in Detroit.  Completely at the end of her rope, Cole’s mom drives overnight from Detroit to deliver Cole to Philadelphia to stay with a father he’s never really known.  When Cole discovers how his estranged dad and a number of their North Philly neighbors are urban cowboys working to breathe new life into a neglected community, he begins to learn about the “Horseman Way”—and about himself in the process.

TEEN VOICE

"I read mostly fantasy, action, adventure, and classic books.  But every now and then, I'll read realistic fiction.  I love reading, and do it at least once every day!"

Denney P., age 18
